Production Vs Lyrics

In Rants by Vinnie1 Comment

A timeless battle within the realm of music that I feel shouldn’t even exist. To me production and lyrics are like a marriage. I think certain individuals make the concept more of a battle than the song itself.

Plus what would one be without the other❓❗️❓❗️

Together they create timeless memories. Some Songs can even spark some tastebuds to resurface while other songs have the power to teleport you to another place in time. And even if you may hear certain songs production minus the lyric, the lyric somehow finds its way to your brain.

I guess the combination is classic like peanut butter and jelly. You can have one without the other, but together they are indeed nostalgic.

Think of your favorite song…

What comes to mind first, the production or the lyrics? I can almost guarantee not too long after one thought, the other fired right behind.

Being as though I fancy myself a Producer and a Lyricist, I’ve learned to balance and respect them both equally. I don’t produce to write lyrics, I produce to produce. I would like to think I understand sides equally because when the right lyric meets the right production, magic happens. The same concept can be applied to a dope lyric, the lyric would be indeed more dope with the proper production accompanying it.

Sometimes I can write a decent lyric but cannot imagine what type of production would compliment it. The same reigns true with certain production. With not saying one is more important than the other, they have to have the appropriate bridge to make the marriage between the two complete.

Just as sure as we like to bob our heads to a beat, we also like the catchiness of words and lyrics.

So if you had to choose between lyrics or production, which would you favor?

Personally I can’t have one with out the other.

Maybe this dilemma what brought us instrumentals and acapella music.
